Prepare Your Pets For Chilly Winters

As the weather of cosy linens and comfy hoodies circles around the corner, we must prepare to head into the stormy breeze and sombre weekends. As we ready ourselves for the season of cold winters, we must also keep in mind the well-being of our fur friends, for whom the cool weather can be extra hard. Although it’s true that animals can adjust and cope with the changing climate more than humans. Still, as caring pet parents, we are responsible for looking after our babies in the best way possible.

Winters can be harsh sometimes, with their brutally cold air and dryness everywhere. Both can lead to itchy, flaking skin in your pet, dry respiratory tracts, eyes, and chapped paws. But worry not, for we are here with some excellent tips to help you in the process of good parenting while winter is still at your doorstep.

Consider cutting off bathing

Your pets’ bodies have their way of fighting off harsh conditions and moulding themselves accordingly. It is suggested to cut down the bathing and showering time for your pooch during winter. Washing off more can remove the protective oily layer that protects their skin from dryness or flaking. Try keeping them away from any water bodies. Also, avoid cutting down hairs too much, for it works as a natural coat for your pup, protecting them from cold.

Resort to Indoors more

When the temperature shoots to an extreme low, it is highly advised to keep your pets inside. Ensure a cosy, comfy, warm place for your pet to snuggle, sleep in, or rest for a while. Keep that place away from chilled floors or space away from any permeation of cold winds. Also, enhance that space with warm blankets and fluffy cushions. The indoor restriction may bar exercise and health training for your pet. For that purpose, substitute indoor training set up to compensate for the loss in exercise routine your bub might be facing.

Moisturise regularly

Dry skin is a common bane that humans and animals share. Just as you spend bills and time on keeping your skin moisturised and hydrated, spare some effort for your favourite pal’s skin. There are a bundle of products and home remedies for you to try on, coconut oil being one of them. Always consult an online vet before applying any body care to your pet.

The grooming that fits the current weather

The grooming routine is a must for every season and also changes depending on the current climatic conditions. So, it’s time you jot down a new winter-suitable grooming pattern for your furry friend. Use a dry washcloth to wipe off the paws after every walk. Also, massage them with coconut oil to keep them warm and pleasant.  When you bathe your babe apply oatmeal shampoo or the one recommended by your vet to calm and avoid any itchiness that might be creeping up.  Lucky Puppy Grooming provides you with some excellent grooming tips suited for winter.

Dehydration can still turn up

Considering the coldness of the weather, we often neglect to suffice ourselves with enough H2O. Carry a bottle of water with you always while heading for a stroll. Ensure the pet is always adequately hydrated, even at home but strictly avoid leftover frozen water. Healthy pink-coloured gums are a sure sign of proper hydration in your pet. In addition to water requirements, also focus on the feeding pattern of your fur child.

Winters can be brutal, but truth be cold, it can also be muzzled into flakes of fun just by staying indoors with cosy sweaters, excellent food and great company. So, while you are hasting up on making winters pet-friendly, don’t forget to enjoy together the weather of joy that waits ahead. And as the memorable quote goes, “Winter is coming. In the winter, we must protect ourselves — look after one another.”  Consult Jaldee Vets for professional health or behaviour-related parenting help.
