Dogs and Newborn Babies: Safe Introduction

When discussing some of the cutest creatures on earth, we think of babies and dogs. There is something about them that attracts adults. But have you ever considered if babies and dogs get along? I, for one, have noticed many people prefer to get a dog when they are about to have a baby. This blog is to figure out how to introduce newborn babies and pet dogs safely. We know that dogs are a man’s best friend. But for a baby, the situation can be slightly different. A dog may or may not react nicely to a new family member.

Introducing dogs and newborn babies can be a delicate and vital process to ensure the safety and well-being of both the dog and the baby. At Jaldee Vets, we bring some crucial tricks and tips which might be handy for new parents.

Tips for Safe Introduction of Dogs and Newborn Babies

Prepare Your Dogs

Out of the two, you can expect your dogs to learn some manners and commands. Most babies growing up with dogs tend to be playful with their pets. Therefore, the dog must maintain some patience in these situations. Before the baby arrives, prepare your furry friend for sounds, smells, and objects. You can use baby dummies or dolls to stimulate the presence of a real baby.

Supervision

Even though most pet parents trust their dogs around their babies, one must always stay alert for any mishap. Always supervise the interactions between your pet and your newborn to ensure proper safety. It is not always a dog’s fault because babies can be harsh when being playful with pups. But they have no understanding of it, but neither do the puppies. Therefore, the best solution is never to leave them together, even if you trust your pet and they haven’t shown any signs of aggression.

Body Language

We have done a blog to study the body language of dogs in particular. And how crucial it is for all pet parents to understand their fur babies. Nonetheless, learn to read your dog’s body language and signs of stress and anxiety. If they show any sign of discomfort or agitation with the baby, it is best to remove them from the situation. And same goes for the baby; if they are slightly uncomfortable or scared around the dog, giving them time to accept the terms is better.

Gradual Introduction

This is where most pet parents need to be corrected. Introducing your pet and baby all of a sudden is a whole lot of surprise for both parties. You must gradually introduce your dogs to your newborn, starting with short and supervised interactions. One must progressively increase the duration and frequency once the dog and the baby become comfortable around each other. It is all about accepting, understanding, and bonding with each other, and the babies take their own sweet time.

Positive Reinforcement

The dog must be the more understanding partner in this friendship. However, dogs are babies at heart and therefore need continuous encouragement. Pet parents must train their dogs to behave a certain way around the baby or be gentle. You can use positive reinforcement to reward your dog for good behavior around the baby. This will encourage your dog to be more patient, soft, and caring. Positive reinforcement can include treats, praise, attention, cuddles, etc.

As long as dogs have space and are not overwhelmed by the baby, most dogs are good with newborns, as if it is already in their nature. At the same time, setting boundaries for the dog is crucial, such as not allowing them to lick or jump on the baby. Similarly, parents should make equal efforts to make babies learn and respect their pets without hurting them.

However, it is vital to consider that every dog is different. And it may take time for your dog to adjust to the new addition to the family. Be patient and consistent with your training; you will see positive results.
