Perfecting Your Pet’s Skin-Care Routine

We are surrounded by numerous advertisements, advice and news on our skincare routine. We spend our jolly time gallivanting aisles and aisles of skin care products in the supermarket. After all the heavy lifting of the day, our skin deserves good-old care and nurture. Just as we invest so much of our time and money in looking after our supple skin, the same care should also be shown to our pet’s skincare regime. Although humans, dogs and cats have a lot in common regarding skin texture, there are subtle differences with human skin being thicker and possessing a slower rate of cell turnover. Thus, tending to your pet with products designed for humans can end up doing them more harm than good. When applied to pets, human products, e.g. Shampoo or conditioner, can not only disturb the balanced microflora of their skin but also prove to be highly unsafe.

Follow a Skincare Regime for Your Pets!

The skin beneath those furs on your pet is a barrier from letting any foreign particles permeate inside. Acting as a protection wall can sometimes take a toll on your pup’s skin. Therefore, treating them with a basic and good skincare regime will keep them glowing and dapper. Your pet’s skin and coat are more than just a pretty sight to the eyes. They are critical beings of the immune system and facilitate proper hydration. They also act as a storage house for nutrients. Routine grooming helps detect and prevent infection or allergy to your pets’ skin.

Skin problems can arise from poor nutrition, allergies, parasitic or bacterial infection or allergic reaction to a particular food. Regular grooming sessions starting from day one can go a long way in maintaining skin health.

1. Good food, Good life.

An equally healthy and nutritious diet is the key to good and healthy skin. Provide your pet with a diet that covers a good mix of all the essential vitamins, acids, proteins and minerals. A meal rich in Omega-3 fatty acids keeps the shine in check and protects the skin and coat. Adding oil and antioxidants to the food maintains a nourishing and healthy skin.

2. Grooming

Grooming forms an integral part of a pet’s care routine. Along with brushing to get rid of those tangles and keeping the fur as furry as ever, it’s also essential to keep a hawk-like watch for flea bites, skin bumps, rashes or redness surfacing on the skin. Do Nail trimming to bid adieu to any poking or scratching or prevent dirt and bacteria from making a home in those long untidy nails. Use of paw creams or butter for dryness and cracks is also advised. From a regular comb to the dental kit, ear and eye wipes, nail clippers, and paw cleaners, there is a massive range of products to better equip you with grooming your pup.

3. Wash the Woof!

Last but not least, regular baths are a must. Routine bathing accompanied with excellent and gentle Shampoo. Aside from this, ears, eyes and paws should also be cleaned neatly at least once or twice a month. On days when your furry friend has said NO to bathing, rely on dry products to save the day, acting as a substitute to bath, and keeping their skin and coat clean and dapper.

Indulging your pet in exercise and activities shall always be beneficial in maintaining the physical and mental health of your darling boo. Keeping a pet skincare regime is another aspect of keeping them strong and healthy. However, if you notice any significant or adverse skin conditions in your pet, it’s always safe to visit the vet in case of any health problems causing the same.
