5 Simple Foods That Can Be Poisonous for Dogs

One thing to which all pet owners can agree is that whenever we open a packet of snacks, we will find our pooches looking at us with their puppy eyes. As if they are starving and have not had a meal for the entire day. Ultimately, we give in to their cuteness and share our food. In comparison, smaller portions may not cause a drastic health issue. But did you know many of our normal food items can be poisonous to dogs?

Ultimately, it is up to the pet parents what they want to include in their pets’ diet. So it is better to be aware of all foods that can be unhealthy for dogs. As a dog owner, you must be aware and alert about your pet’s consumption. And if that food can have any side effects.

Is it safe to share human food with your pets?

Sharing food with pets can be okay in moderation, but it is essential to be mindful of their nutritional needs and safety. Some human foods, such as chocolate, caffeine, nuts, grapes, and raisins, can be toxic for dogs. While we may consider these food choices healthy, a dog’s diet and digestive system are very different from a human’s.

Sticking to the recommended pet food, specially formulated to meet their nutritional requirements, is better. Occasional treats and human meals are acceptable.

Top 5 Food Poisonous for Dogs

Chocolate and Caffeine

Chocolate is a big NO-NO for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant that is toxic to dogs. Depending on the amount of chocolate consumed, our fur babies might suffer from diarrhea, irregular heartbeats, rapid breathing, seizures, or even death.

While caffeine is not as toxic as chocolate, it can cause several unpleasant health effects, such as hyperactiveness, restlessness, increased heart rate and respiration, and vomiting.

Grapes and Raisins

While these fruits are healthy for humans, they contain an unknown toxin that can cause kidney failure in dogs. The exact cause of the toxicity is unknown, but even small amounts can be harmful. It is always better to err on the side of caution and avoid giving grapes and raisins to dogs.

Grape and raisin toxicity symptoms include vomiting, appetite loss, abdominal pain, and increased thirst and urination. Standard treatment for this is inducing vomiting, giving activated charcoal to absorb any remaining fluids, and providing adequate medications.

Nuts

Not one, but many fur babies enjoy eating peanuts and cashews. However, their size makes them a choking hazard, and the fats can cause health issues. In particular, Macadamia Nuts are poisonous for dogs and can lead to muscle and joint pain, lethargy, and swelling. And walnuts have aflatoxin, which can cause liver damage in dogs.

Although almonds, pecans, and peanuts are not toxic to dogs, they can still cause digestive problems because of the high number of oils and fats.

Garlic and Onion

Now, this is why many human foods can be toxic for dogs. People use large amounts of garlic and onion in their cooking, but these ingredients are poisonous for our pets. These food contain disulfides and sulfoxides, which can damage red blood cells and cause lead to anemia in dogs.

Milk and other Dairy Products

Even though milk and dairy products have many calcium-boosting properties, not many dogs have the lactose enzymes to digest these products. Many dogs are lactose intolerant and cannot effectively break down the lactose found in dairy products. Consumption of these products can lead to digestive issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Although some dogs might be able to digest milk and dairy products, avoiding them or diluting them with some water is still advised.

A few more poisonous food for dogs are fatty foods, avocados, alcohol, sugar, turkey skin, and potatoes.

All pet parents need to look out for their dogs and their diets. Undoubtedly, pets need occasional treats as well. And it is our responsibility to find alternative treats that are safe and healthy for dogs. It is best to consult with a veterinarian, who can help you determine the best diet for your dog’s specific needs depending on its size, age, and any health concerns.
